What makes a great love song? The top romantic songs are beautiful songs - even without the lyrics.
But what makes the best romantic songs are actually the lyrics that go beyond the musical or Broadway performance and into our own lives and experiences. They don't have to line up exactly with what we've been through - but they must be close enough for us to adopt a kinship with the song.
In the words of a great song title from the musical "My Fair Lady", these lyrics must get...."On The Street Where You Live."
Although country music relates to us in many lyrics and song titles, most often, it does not reflect the romantic mood of say, the Big Band songs.
So it is great music, but rather lacking in the romantic subtleties of the song.
